Kendrick, spoke before a silent crowd as he gave an inspiring account of his journey from growing up in an inner city high school and the challenges that brings; to becoming a soldier at the age of 18; deploying to Iraq at the age of 20; being shot by a sniper in both legs that caused injury and permanent damage to his left leg; months of rehabilitation before being medically discharged from the Army in April 2010; his amazing recovery; a period of homelessness and hopelessness; and his journey back to a productive independent life.

He persevered and gained job training and support through an AbilityOne contract at the Continuing Developmental Services, Unistel Spice Factory in Rochester, New York. Today he is enrolled in a degree program for audio technical engineering in Marietta, Georgia.

Kendrick received a standing ovation at the end of his remarks.
